TRUE LIFE STORY: [MY CLIENT AND I]

I remember a divorce case I handled some years ago.  The Respondent, the wife, blatantly refused to show up in court or engage a lawyer; and the judge wasn’t ready to proceed without her. One day in court, the judge, again, refused to proceed with the matter without the woman. That we must meet with her and hold the statutory conference before she will hear the matter. I told the judge we have served her the petition and the hearing notice for today’s sitting and clearly she is not interested in defending the petition, so, we should proceed in the interest of justice.  The judge come vex for me o. That I should do more than that. I should get her number, call her and try to see her and hold a meeting with both of them and try to settle them. E come be like say na me wan scatter their marriage.  The judge asked the petitioner, my client, if he doesn’t want settlement, he said no. He was visibly angry, talking about how he just wants a divorce immediately and nothing else. Th

TUESDAY CORNER (124): By Bizuum Yadok

It is believed that Late General Sani Abacha once said, "government has an interest in every crises situation that exceeds 24 hours". I have heard that a number of times but have never been able to pin that statement to a source. However, I just want to borrow that logic to infer that 'government has SERIOUS interest in any kind of mega oil bunkering that exceeds, 10 days, a month, a year, and even 9 years'. Thanks to Mr. Peter Goandverifyit Obi, an extended investigation has been launched into the bunkering activities in Nigeria's oil rich region. Summarily, there has been a high-scale illegal bunkering at an average of at least 250bpd for about 9 years now and the government claims to know nothing about it. What interests me the most is that the combined forces could not adequately secure the pipelines that former/present militants had to be given to charge to secure Nigeria's pipelines. Currently, the former Niger Delta warlord and commander of

TUESDAY CORNER (122): Bizum Yadok

It has been sixty-two years since Nigeria became independent. I would still insist that Nigeria's sticking together, or forcefully staying together, as one nation in spite of her diversity is a product of a miracle. Many within and outside Nigeria have secretly wished that Nigeria would collapse, maybe some still do, but to what end? That we have come this far as a nation , regardless of our "jaga-jaga", it means we can go farther as a nation.    Nigeria is still a very rich nation, perhaps the richest in the world, but is has suffered from poor leadership over the years. I know history books and documentaries credit our "founding fathers" with fighting for Nigeria's independence but the same materials conveniently chose to conceal embers of religious and ethnic tensions caused by some of these same people, which have been amplified over the years to what we are currently managing now. In any case, this is not the time for blame game; if we insis

She gave the apology on Friday in Abuja at the 62nd Independence Day Special Juma’at Prayer and Public Lecture with the theme “Shura: The Islamic Foundation of True Democracy” which was held at the National Mosque Conference Hall, Abuja. According to her, the noticeable depreciation of the naira and the continuous drop in the foreign exchange rate have taken their toll on the economy, which she blames for the hardships and difficulties Nigerians face in education, health, and other day-to-day activities. She did, however, commend the military’s efforts in addressing the country’s security challenges thus far and wished them continued success. “Your Excellencies, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, as you may be aware that this government is making its exit an
