A former Plateau United midfielder, Jerome Dung, has called on ex-Plateau State governor, Simon Bako Lalong, to fulfil promises allegedly made to the club’s 2017 squad after their historic Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) victory.
Dung, in a Facebook post on Sunday, September 21, 2025, reminded the former governor that each player and official was promised ₦1.5 million and a plot of land, which are yet to be given nine years after the triumph.
Dung expressed disappointment that despite their efforts in bringing home the league title for the first time in Plateau United’s history, the pledges remain unfulfilled.
He stressed that many of his teammates, some now retired or without clubs, are struggling to care for themselves and their families. He said it was disheartening that what was meant to be a reward for their hard work has turned into a long wait.
Taking his concerns to a wider audience, the player noted that the unredeemed pledge has become a burden on those who gave their best for the state.
According to him, even though several players were not indigenes of Plateau, they put in everything to achieve glory for the club, which remains one of the greatest sporting feats in the state’s history. Dung appealed to Lalong to remember his promise, insisting that the amount in question is small compared to the impact it would have on the lives of his former teammates.
Dung, who played for Plateau United from 2014 to 2020 before moving abroad in 2022, now plies his trade in Switzerland.
He emphasized that the 2017 squad deserves to be honoured and rewarded, adding that “our reward must be paid.” As of the time of filing this report, former governor Simon Lalong, who was in office between 2015 and 2023, has yet to respond to the claims.
