MEET DR YILJI CASHMIR KUMTAP

**Autobiography of Dr. Yilji Cashmir KUMTAP
My name is Dr. Yilji Cashmir Kumtap, aa consultant cardiologist and head of the Acute and Emergency Medicine unit at Jos University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria. My journey in the medical field has been driven by a profound passion for healthcare and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of my patients. This autobiography is a glimpse into my life, career, and the experiences that have shaped me into the doctor I am today.

**Early Life and Education**
I was born and raised in the vibrant city of Jos, Plateau State. From a young age, I was fascinated by the sciences and had a keen interest in understanding how the human body works. My parents, recognizing my passion, supported me in every way possible, encouraging me to pursue my dreams and aspirations.

I attended Government Science School, Kuru for my secondary education, where I excelled in my studies. After completing my secondary education, I gained admission to the prestigious University of Jos, where I pursued a degree in Medicine and Surgery. My years at university were marked by rigorous academic work, sleepless nights, and a relentless pursuit of academic , sociocultural and political knowledge. I was privileged to become a student leader having served as Welfare Secretary of the Students' Union Government in 2005.

**Medical Training and Career**

Upon completing my degree, I embarked on a challenging but rewarding journey through my medical internship and residency. I trained at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, where I had the opportunity to work with some of the finest minds in Nigerian healthcare. The experience was invaluable, providing me with a solid foundation in clinical practice and patient care.

At the completion of my residency, I specialized in Internal Medicine with sub-specialization in Cardiology. My decision was influenced by my desire to understand complex cardiac conditions and provide comprehensive care to my patients. I pursued further specialization in Policy, Strategy and Leadership at the prestigious National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Jos, where I honed my skills and expanded my knowledge.
The quest to better comprehend human resource management led me to pursue a masters degree in Business Administration at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria

**Professional Achievements**

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to work in various capacities. I have served as a consultant in several hospitals, contributing to improving healthcare delivery in my country. My work has also taken me to rural areas, where I have had the privilege of providing medical care to underserved communities.

One of my proudest achievements is the establishment of a a solar powered borehole in my hometown of Abwor-Dyis, Pankshin. The project was the product of an advocacy to NASCO group of companies.
The borehole provides safe, clean and portable water to the community. And ensuring that water borne diseases are curbed. This initiative has been a testament to my belief that availability of social amenities are a fundamental human right.

**Challenges and Triumphs**

The journey has not been without its challenges. The healthcare system in Nigeria faces numerous obstacles, including limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and a shortage of medical personnel. Despite these challenges, my dedication to my profession and my patients has never wavered. During my tenure as General Secretary of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Plateau State Chapter, I have learned to adapt, innovate, and find solutions even in the most difficult circumstances.
**Personal Life**

Beyond my professional life, I am a devoted husband and father. My family has been my pillar of support, providing me with the strength and motivation to continue my work. In my free time, I enjoy reading, traveling, and engaging in community service. I have been part of several free medical outreaches to numerous communities. These activities help me stay grounded and connected to the world beyond the hospital walls.

**Vision for the Future**

As I look to the future, I am filled with hope and determination. I envision a Nigeria where healthcare is accessible to all, where medical professionals are empowered to deliver the best care possible, and where the health and well-being of every citizen are prioritized. I am committed to playing my part in making this vision a reality, through continued service, advocacy, and mentorship.

**Conclusion**

My journey as Dr. Yilji Cashmir Kumtap has been one of passion, perseverance, and purpose. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had and the people who have supported me along the way. As I continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of medicine, I remain dedicated to my mission of healing, caring, and making a difference in the lives of my patients.
