Abstract:
Disability is a common aspect of human life, affecting individuals due to various factors such as illness, aging, or accidents. It is crucial to consider the design and planning of urban furniture and spaces to accommodate people with disabilities. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 10% of the global population experiences some form of physical disability. Disabled individuals often encounter urban and architectural barriers in cities, necessitating adjustments and special design criteria for inclusive urban spaces. This case study examines the inclusion of basic urban furniture for people with disabilities in public spaces, focusing on Cross River State.

1. Introduction:
The aim of this case study is to highlight the importance of inclusive design in public spaces for people with disabilities. By incorporating appropriate urban furniture, we can create an environment that caters to the needs of individuals with physical disabilities. This study focuses on Cross River State, exploring various urban spaces where these inclusive innovations can be introduced.

2. Importance of Inclusive Urban Furniture:
2.1 Street Furniture:
The inclusion of street furniture such as bus stops, benches, mailboxes, lampposts, signboards, telephone booths, public toilets, newspaper kiosks, planting tubs, and garbage bins is essential in creating accessible public spaces for people with disabilities. These elements should be strategically placed to ensure convenience and ease of use.

2.2 Footpath Textural Changes:
Textural changes in footpath surfaces can assist visually impaired individuals in identifying the location of social amenities. By incorporating tactile cues and different textures, blind or visually impaired pedestrians can navigate public spaces more safely.

2.3 Resting Facilities:
Resting facilities should be strategically placed along main circulation paths in public parks, near accessible entrances and exits, and in other high-traffic areas. These facilities provide a place for individuals with disabilities to rest and regain their strength while exploring public spaces.

2.4 Public Benches:
Provision of public benches with sufficient space for wheelchair users is essential. An adjoining space of 1.20m should be allocated next to the bench to accommodate wheelchair accessibility.

2.5 Assistive Technology:
Introducing relevant assistive technology in public spaces can greatly enhance accessibility for people with disabilities. This may include features such as tactile maps, audible pedestrian signals, and wheelchair-friendly ramps.

3. Proposed Locations for Inclusive Innovations:
To create a more inclusive environment, the following locations within Cross River State are recommended for the introduction of these inclusive innovations:

3.1 State University:
The state university should incorporate inclusive urban furniture, such as accessible benches, tactile pathways, and wheelchair-friendly ramps. This will ensure that students, faculty, and visitors with disabilities can navigate the campus with ease.

3.2 Government Offices:
Government offices play a crucial role in serving the public. By implementing inclusive urban furniture, these offices can create an inclusive and accessible environment for citizens with disabilities.

3.3 State Library:
The state library should prioritize the inclusion of basic urban furniture for people with disabilities. This includes accessible seating areas, braille signage, and assistive technology for visually impaired patrons.

3.4 Bus Stops:
Bus stops should be equipped with accessible seating, tactile paving, and clear signage. Additionally, audio announcements and other forms of assistive technology can aid individuals with disabilities in navigating public transportation.

3.5 Markets:
Inclusive urban furniture should be integrated into marketplaces to ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities. This includes providing ramps, accessible stalls, and seating areas throughout the market.

3.6 Airport:
Airports should prioritize inclusive design principles to accommodate travelers with disabilities.

This can be achieved through the inclusion of wheelchair-friendly pathways, accessible seating, and assistive technology for navigation.

3.7 Parks:
Public parks should have resting facilities, accessible benches, and tactile pathways. By incorporating these features, individuals with disabilities can enjoy the recreational spaces within Cross River State.

4. Conclusion:
Creating inclusive public spaces that cater to the needs of people with disabilities is crucial for promoting equal opportunities and accessibility. By incorporating basic urban furniture and considering the specific requirements of individuals with disabilities, Cross River State can become a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all its residents and visitors.
