TUESDAY CORNER (079)

A joke once told by popular Nigerian comedian goes: An armed robber came to the houses three Nigerians. The first house was that of the Yoruba man who, out of fear, pleaded with the robber to spare his life and take everything he wanted. At the second house, the Igbo man was more daring and  preferred not to part with all his resources, "nna make we negotiate na, you no fit pack everything like that na". At the Hausa man's house the robber was face-to-face with his victim who held a kitchen knife and said, "don ubanka, if you shoot, I chuk". Apart from amusing us, jokes also have a way of communicating certain realities.

So last week the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, in a press statement revealed Sunday Igboho's sponsors even linking some of them to financiers of terrorists in the north. He said, Igboho is a signatory to 43 different accounts in 9 banks and between the months of May - September, 2020, Igboho received a total of 127 million naira from different people including a serving member of the National Assembly.

It is curious to note that whenever a member of the National Assembly is linked with sponsorship of hooligans, there is an immediate tendency to "off the mic" without mentioning the real name of the person. You may recall that Buhari's Independence Day speech highlighted that sponsors of Nnamdi Kanu have been identified including a serving member of the National Assembly and pim, the mic 🎤 went off. From all indications, the Federal Government knows all those people disturbing the peace or at least those sponsoring the poster boys for civil unrest in the south east and the south west.

Most surprisingly, it still doesn't know who the major sponsors of bandits or Boko Haram are, or perhaps they have chosen to keep that fact away from the public domain because - considering the first joke - if they "shoot", the sponsors will "chuk". Obviously, once sponsors of Bandits and Boko Haram are revealed, there is a likelihood that the ensuing chain of revelations will end in high places in Abuja. But why not? Why can't we name and shame them all for once? Recently, David Hundeyin gave a lead which was immediately dismissed and buried.

I am convinced that the amount of information in the hands of the government could give us sleepless once we get a wind of it.

Also, last week, Nnamdi Kanu's was arraigned before the court in an almost secret trial, which many were kept out of the loop. For all we know, the trial has been postponed to 10th of November, 2020. However, very recently, IPOB (the current decider of activities in the south east) gave an ultimatum of 4th November for the release of Nnamdi Kanu else there will be a weeklong sit-at-home in the entire south east from the 5-10th November, 2020. Everytime I see the growing influence of IPOB in the south east is scares me.

In the same week, during a coordinated attack by the joint security forces, more than 50 bandits were killed in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna State. However, prior to the attack, Bandits had killed about forty people in a market in Sokoto State. It would seem that the bandits are leveling scores with the army, and this means that there is more that needs to be done. The Bandits have even graduated from attacking tarred roads to railway lines. On Thursday last week, the Abuja-Kaduna rail was blasted by bandits. Fortunately, no life was lost but it would have been very catastrophic. It seems their P.R.O, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi is currently on break otherwise we would have heard something from him.

The first memorial of the killing of #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki Gate by Nigerian Soldiers was marked last week. One year on, the killers have not been brought to book, actually the killers are not the soldiers but those that gave them the order and without reaching that point it would be hard to find closure on the matter because you all know where it is going to lead. The Vice-President's speech on that day was quite consoling as he spelt out what has been done so far for some victims of the Lekki shootings and SARS in general, and also what will be done to other victims soon.

I just pray say the other victims never enter one chance o, because e be like say this whole Buharia na one chance we don enter now.

See you next week!

2023: Catholics Berate Lalong Over Attempt To Drag Pope Into Politics

August 11, 2022  Concerned Catholics in Nigeria have called for the suspension of Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong for dragging the name of Pope into local politics that has nothing to do with the Church. According to the group, Lalong should be punished for bringing the name of Pope and the Catholic Church to disrepute while giving his reasons for accepting to serve as Director General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council. Speaking as a press conference in Abuja addressed by National Convener/President, Dr Ben Amodu, said the concerned Catholics in Nigeria are alarmed that Lalong would elect to throw caution into the wind by dragging the revered Catholic Church into local politics in Nigeria for whatever it is worth. “The reference to the Pope in his statement for accepting to serve as the Director General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council was made in poor taste and a puerile attempt to drag the Catholic Church into a matter that has no bearing with the
