Zulum: Security Won't Improve Until Merit Not Politicized Recruitment is Implemented

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum says:    " Recruitment into security agencies in Nigeria is politicised. These days, governors, ministers and other top government functionaries have slots. Nobody interviews them whether they are qualified or not.    " Admission into Nigerian Army, Police and others are now politicized.    "Unless we get it right, nothing will happen in this country. If we want to make progress, we must ensure that we pick the best, if not, we shall continue to recruit the dull ones."_ Governor Babagana Zullum of Borno state. Facebook:- Bello Lukman

TUESDAY CORNER (121): Bizum Yadok

ASUU defied the court order to go back to work. I must admit that ASUU has no equal whenever it comes to fearlessly facing the government with its demands. If they give in now it could mean that the long strike was for nothing and the worse part is that they would lose their six months pay. On the other hand, the government may be thinking that if they pay ASUU members now for the period of the strike they may be laying a foundation for future strikes as well. The arguments on both sides are plausible but then the loss encountered so far is unqualifiable. Now that is not what scares me the most. What scares me the most is when I look at the future of Nigerian universities vis-a-vis the dwindling resources of the country. I regret to say this, but as long as Nigeria continues to fund universities and as long as they keep establishing new universities to score political goals then we must expect more ASUU strikes in future.  Some of us only got to hear stories of Nigerian uni

Uganda Records First Ebola Death Since 2019

Uganda’s health ministry on Tuesday announced the country’s first fatality from the highly contagious Ebola virus since 2019, declaring an outbreak in the central district of Mubende. “The confirmed case is a 24-year-old male… (who) presented with EVD symptoms and later succumbed,” the ministry said on Twitter, using an abbreviation for Ebola virus disease. In a statement released earlier on Tuesday, the World Health Organization said a 24-year-old man in Mubende had tested positive for “the relatively rare Sudan strain” of the virus. “This follows an investigation by the National Rapid Response team of six suspicious deaths that have occurred in the district this month,” WHO said. Eight other suspected patients were undergoing treatment, WHO said. “This is the first time in more than a decade that Uganda is recording the Ebola Sudan strain,” WHO Africa Director Matshidiso Moeti said. “We are working closely with the national health authorities to investigate the source of

It has no nutritional value – FG to ban ‘Kpomo’ to grow the economy

The federal government says it is proposing legislation to ban the consumption of animal skin, locally known as ponmo, in the country to revive tanneries. Muhammad Yakubu, director-general, Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Zaria, said this in Abuja on Sunday. He said the litigation was necessary to revive the comatose leather industry in the country. He said the habit of eating animal skin, which has no nutritional value, should be stopped to save the industry and boost the nation’s economy. The director-general added that the institute, in collaboration with stakeholders in the industry, would approach the national assembly and state governments to bring out legislation banning “ponmo” consumption. “To the best of my knowledge, Nigerians are the only people in the world that overvalue skin as food, after all, Ponmo has no nutritional value. At one point, there was a motion before the two chambers of the national assembly, it was debated but I

Gov. Ayade makes his staff stand for hours under the sun for resuming late to work in Cross River State

Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade, this Wednesday, locked out some of his aides, including some staff of Government House, Calabar, for coming late to work. On arriving at the office as early as 7:58am, Ayade was said to have immediately ordered the opening of a register and asked the chief security officer to lock the gate at 8:30am against any late-coming worker thereafter. Those locked out include all levels of workers, including top-ranking officers of the state civil service as well as political appointees. On Tuesday, Christian Ita, the governor’s spokesperson, said Ayade had always expressed his displeasure for lateness, adding that he had rewarded those who are committed to their duties. We Spent N50m On Alabo’s Illness, Wike Blasts Amaechi

The Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has blasted his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, over his comments at the burial of four-time federal minister, Alabo Tamunotenyim Omubo Graham-Douglas (TOG). Amaechi at the burial over the weekend knocked Wike for not taking responsibility for Alabo’s burial. He said, “Indeed going by the contributions he made to the state, I was thinking that the state would take responsibility for everything concerning Alabo. You don’t need to be Governor to be recognised.” Reacting to Amaechi, the Rivers governor said, “It’s unfortunate and I ask him, when Alabo was sick, where were you? This state government committed so much to make sure Alabo survived. I want to challenge anybody. We didn’t spend anything less than N50 million to make sure our elder statesman survived. It is the survival we want. We wanted him to be alive. “When his late son had an accident and was flown to London, this state government bore the cost.  Go and ask people. We don’t n

MESSAGE TO YOUNG PERSONS BY BIGBLUNT OF JOS

DEAR YOUNG PEOPLE. I know you must have heard this but I am happy to remind you again; you were born to win but you should know that you can only win with passion, hard work and discipline (keyword: discipline), and not pride or arrogance.  In my experience  of working as a Bar man, Okada man, class teacher (precisely primary  2),  online and walk-in customer agent and now a Broadcaster I have learnt alot, being people-centric jobs that are stressful and require discipline and professionalism. I have seen, met, heard and experienced  a lot and I understand  that Rome wasn't built  in a day. It was a project of hardwork, dedication and passion.  Interestingly, when  you see young people these days, especially in this creative industry, one begins  to wonder what orientation is given to them in school. There is absence of discipline  and passion. As if that is not enough, you see high rate of illogical reasoning, desperate steps and self destructive ideologies that leave

‘May Her Pain Be Excruciating’: Professor Wishes Dying Queen Elizabeth More Suffering

Hours before the death of Queen Elizabeth was announced, a Carnegie Mellon professor blasted the United Kingdom as a “genocidal empire” and wished the 96-year-old monarch “excruciating” pain. Professor Uju Anya, who teaches linguistics and critical race studies at Carnegie Mellon University,” according to the website, sent out her maleficent remark via Twitter. At the time, the beloved queen’s death had not yet been announced. “I heard the chief monarch of a thieving raping genocidal empire is finally dying. May her pain be excruciating,” she tweeted. After the news broke of the queen’s death, Anya, who hails from Nigeria, doubled down with another nasty social media missive. “If anyone expects me to express anything but disdain for the monarch who supervised a government that sponsored the genocide that massacred and displaced half my family and the consequences of which those alive today are still trying to overcome, you can keep wishing upon a star,” she wrote. Anya was

I don’t care to be the biggest Nigerian artist, I’m just happy I can do what I love and take care of my people from it. If you knew just half the sh*t I used to do for money, risking my freedom daily, you would be way happier for me. "I came into the music industry straight from CHELMSFORD HMP. I had no idea I would even live this long. So when people talk about me now, it’s all just funny. Of course I would perform with my injured leg or even no legs or no arms.” Credit: Twitter |

INEC deleting double registrants from voter register – Mahmood

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday said the estimated three million Internally Displaced Persons would participate in the 2023 general elections. The commission added that it will display voter register across the country once it completes the ongoing Automated Biometric Identification System to weed out all double/multiple as well as ineligible registrants. The commission’s Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stated these in Abuja at a stakeholders’ meeting on the 2022 Revised Framework and Regulations for Voting by IDPs. Yakubu explained that the revised framework had taken into consideration several developments since the last review and validation in 2018. He said, “The policy was to ensure that no eligible Nigerian is left out of the electoral process on account of displacement, disability or other circumstances that may limit citizens’ participation in the electoral process. “One of such developments is the increased number of IDPs as a result of wid

Sad Day in Calendar of Jos: September 7th, 2001

The 2001 Jos riots were riots involving Christians and Muslims in Jos, Nigeria, over the appointment of a Muslim politician, Alhaji Muktar Mohammed, as local coordinator of the federal poverty alleviation program. The clashes started on 7 September and lasted nearly two weeks, ending on 17 September. CAUSES Religious and ethnic conflicts have repeatedly occurred in Jos due to the city's geographical placement in Nigeria. Jos, the capital of Plateau State, is located in the middle of the country, which lies between the predominantly Muslim north and the predominantly Christian south. Jos was also known for its job opportunities leading people from around Nigeria to move there for employment. The influx of people led to tensions between members of "indigene" (indigenous) ethnic groups and non-indigene ethnic groups (often referred to as "settlers"). In June 2001 the federal government appointed a Hausa Muslim politician, Alhaji Muktar Mohammed, as loca

A Week After Yelwa-Shendam Hiatus: Why The Ugly Past Should Not Be Repeated

PREAMBLE: The clamour for war and crisis is a call that must always be seen as step back in any society, bar the cause, motive or any driving force behind such conflict, peace is always better. In one of Ronald Keagan's famous quotes, he said; "Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means."  Could it be that the rumour which attempts to escalate but luckily dies off at its latent stage on 27th August, 2022 in Shendam town be an indication of a long standing injustice? This is a topic for another day. We marvel that the timely intervention of security agencies was enough to avert the perceived danger. Civilly, irrespective of our difference in choices, interest and perceptions, we must peacefully handle such dividing opinions using dialogue or any other acceptable conflict resolution procedure. BRIEF HISTORY OF YELWA-NSHAR  Yelwa is a commercial town in Shendam LGA, about 20km away from the town of Shendam - Southern

Jang: Heavy Security at Plateau State High Court, Jos.

There is heavy presence of security personnel currently at the premises of the Plateau State High in Jos, the state capital. The fierce looking armed security personnel mainly from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Security were said to have cordoned off all the four entrances leading to the court as early as 6am on Friday. Our correspondent, who arrived at the court premises around 8am, observed that those driving into the court premises as well as those walking to the area were stopped and questioned by security officers before they were allowed in, while others were refused entry. One of the security personnel who spoke with our correspondent said, “Today is not an ordinary day for us. We are here on a special duty at the court and that is
